Examples of sustainability efforts

These are specific examples, but please consult the websites of the member companies for more extensive details.

Bisphenol-free thermal papers

ETPA members have committed to further developing and transitioning to bisphenol-free thermal papers, in line with the evolution of the regulatory environment. For example, Koehler’s portfolio of thermal paper for producing cash register rolls ranges from BPA-free to phenol-free. Koehler Paper also offers an award-winning technology for thermal paper called Blue4est that does not require colour developer, which means it is fully recyclable.

Reducing water consumption

Kanzan Spezialpapiere covers its water requirements with the surface water of the river Rur, which runs through Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Its process water is treated in the north of Düren in a wastewater treatment plant operated by the Eifel-Rur water association. A multi-stage process of mechanical and biological purification is used, which cleans the water efficiently and safely before it is returned to the Rur. This means that Kazan does not consume the vast majority of the water, but only uses it for a short period of time before returning it to nature.

Energy consumption and transport

Through the use of innovative technologies, Mitsubishi HiTec Europe has been able to continuously reduce water and energy consumption per amount of paper produced for years. The company also continuously invests in wastewater purification. In addition, Mitsubishi HiTec Europe is shifting a large part of its global transport to rail and sea-based methods, thus benefiting from intermodal transport.

Action against emissions

Lecta has committed to a 40% absolute reduction in Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This commitment aligns with the 1.5°C pathway goal established under the Paris Agreement, demonstrating Lecta’s dedication to decarbonisation and climate change mitigation. More information available in the 2023 Sustainability Report.

Sustainable procurement

The Koehler Group has been awarded platinum status by EcoVadis, placing it in the top one per cent of all rated companies worldwide in the paper industry. This recognition highlights Koehler’s achievements in sustainable procurement strategies and its commitment to climate protection, including generating more energy from renewable sources than required for its operations by 2030.

Renewable and sustainably managed sources

The starting point for Kanzan’s papers is pulp obtained from wood. The company only buys pulp of the highest quality that comes from an elemental chlorine-free production process (ECF). Furthermore, the company has committed to using only pulp from controlled production, preferably Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sources.

Occupational Health and Safety

Jujo Thermal continuously develops its working conditions and operations in order to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for its employees. Its principle is to act proactively to reduce occupational safety and health risks in order to prevent occupational accidents and work-related illnesses and to reduce detrimental workload. The company eliminates hazards and reduces risks through assessments, safety rounds, various inspections, and risk observation and close-call reports, carried out in collaboration with employees and other relevant interest groups.

Environmental, social & governance (ESG) strategy

Lecta has supported the UN Global Compact since 2011, making an ethical commitment to incorporate its ten principles of conduct and action as an integral part of its strategy, culture, and day-to-day operations, in the fields of the environment, labour and Human Rights, and the fight against corruption. In accordance with these principles, environmental investments and the ongoing search for new innovative solutions based on natural, renewable raw materials are the key pillars of its sustainable development.

Operating policy

Jujo Thermal’s operating policy forms the basis for management systems that comply with Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standards (ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 22000), an energy efficiency system, and a chain of custody system for wood. The policy also creates a foundation for setting operational targets. Management reviews ensure that the operating policy is up to date, in addition to monitoring the policy’s implementation and deciding on the need for any changes.

Global responsibility

As a company with German-Japanese roots, Mitsubishi HiTec Europe is very aware of its global responsibility. This approach inspires the responsible use of resources and the sustainable production of high-quality speciality papers, using renewable raw materials. To achieve sustainable energy production, the company uses highly efficient combined heat and power generation in its modern gas power station.
